Top Reasons For Charlotte Divorce Filings

Divorce is the final resort for a troubled marriage, but what makes two (once loving) spouses declare that they’ve had enough? What makes them call it quits? As a leading Charlotte divorce lawyer in Ballantyne, we’ve heard it all. From adultery and lack of trust to money management issues and general disagreements, there are many reasons why people decide to file for divorce.

Researchers from the National Fatherhood Initiative recently conducted a survey asking people why they decided to untie the knot. Based on their findings, here are the most common reasons for divorce:

  • Lack of Commitment – A whopping 73% of couples said a lack of commitment was the main reason for their divorce. Furthermore, 62% of exes said they wished their spouse had worked harder to stay married.
  • Arguing – Sure, almost every couple argues, but this study reports that 65% of divorces occur because of the bickering. The main reason these arguments escalate to divorce is due to the lack of understanding, appreciation or validation of a partner’s perspective.
  • Cheating – It’s no surprise that infidelity plays a significant role in divorce rates. As the third most common reason for divorce, 55% of respondents claimed this as their reason for their split.
  • Marrying Too Young – Puppy love can be deceiving for some. 46% blamed being too young as a factor to their failed marriage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of teenage marriages fail within the first 15 years; that number drops to 35% for couples in their mid-twenties.
  • Unrealistic Expectations – Some have a hard time foreseeing the amount of conflict that can come with marriage. This accounts for 45% of divorces.
  • Lack of Equality – A large percentage (44%) said they felt their marriage was unequal, which led to divorce. If one person feels an unfair amount of responsibility is placed on them in the marriage, the relationship could be doomed.
  • Not Being Prepared – With a lack of marital preparation, couples can find themselves struggling in their marriage. 41% of respondents said they weren’t prepared for the married life and the work that goes into it.
  • Abuse – Unfortunately, 29% of splits occur because of domestic violence. This includes mental and physical abuse. If you’re in an abusive relationship, we recommend seeking legal help and protecting yourself immediately.
